GONZALES, Monterey County — November 5, 2026. A single vote separates the two leading candidates in the Gonzales Unified School District Trustee Area 2 election. The sixth semi-final county report, issued at 2:23 a.m. November 4, shows Erin Askew 83 votes (36.40%), Marvelia Valdez 82 (35.96%) and Joe Sanchez 63 (27.63%). The vote remains unofficial.

Why one vote matters

A difference of one vote could be affected by a single additional valid ballot, although no reporter should forecast the final result without knowing how many eligible Area 2 ballots are outstanding. The 228 reported valid selections cover this specific trustee area, not all Gonzales residents. Additional mail and provisional ballots may be counted during the official canvass.

Separate elections in two other trustee areas

The same report lists Area 3: Maria D. Cuevas 160, Gerardo Villegas 117, and Area 4: Abraham Flores Avila 147, Rubycela Valdez 89. These are separate electoral districts within a larger school system. One area’s candidate votes cannot be added to another’s or interpreted as a districtwide multi-seat ballot.

Another close result: Gonzales City Council

In the separate municipal District 1 contest, Delia Gutierrez now has 131 votes to Maria Orozco’s 129. That reverses Orozco’s five-vote advantage in the first election-night release. California58 has updated its earlier council report. The school and city ballots use different jurisdictions.

What happens next

School trustees make decisions about district policy, finances, facilities and superintendent oversight. Their legal term is determined by the official election, not the first unofficial results. The King City Rustler reproduces the county’s sixth report; Monterey County Elections will report later batches and certification. The county scheduled its next release for November 5, but this story reports the earlier November 4 source snapshot.
