GONZALES / SOUTH SALINAS VALLEY — October 27, 2026. Rural households near Gonzales with private wells or qualifying smaller water systems have a chance to assess leaks and water efficiency at no cost under an expanded program administered by the Salinas Valley Basin Groundwater Sustainability Agency.
What applicants receive
WaterWise Consulting staff may inspect faucets, toilet fixtures, indoor appliances, landscape irrigation and other water-use sources for waste. Eligible households receive an assessment report and may qualify for free installation of certain small water-saving devices.
The agency expanded the program to all six Salinas Valley groundwater subbasins in September 2026, and intends to continue through the end of December 2026 or until funds are exhausted. Homeowners and renters can be eligible, but only properties meeting the geographic and water-provider criteria are covered. Participation is not guaranteed after a form is submitted.

The agency specifies that the property must not be served by a large utility, an adult must be present during the visit, and owner approval is needed for entry. Assessments are ordinarily held 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays. City-served households inside Gonzales should not assume they qualify simply because they live in Monterey County.

Editorial note: This is specific rural-household guidance, not a claim that free plumbing upgrades are available to all residents.
